Possibly the most iconic wine name in the world, Latour is a first growth of the Medoc 1855 classification and a quintessential Pauillac. The vineyards for this iconic wine have the deepest gravel beds in the region and more undulating slopes than any other vineyard. The combination of these produce wines of mythical proportions with the ability to age for decades and in some cases centuries. With the majorty of the vineyards alongside the Gironde river, abutting Léoville-las-Cases to the south and Haut Bages Liberal to the north there are also vineyards located further in land, used for the second and third wines, Les Forts and Pauillac de Latour. The heart of the 90 hectare estate is a 47ha parcel known as l’Enclos, considered among or possibly the best terroirs in all of Bordeaux. L’Enclos is the source for the grand vin and is made up of deep gravel and clay soils providing the power and finesse. Here the gravel can be a staggering 5 metres deep, unrivalled by other vineyards.

On the perimetre of the Enclos the soil is more a mix of clay and gravel providing the structure and tannins. The unique terroir is perfect for the plantings of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot with a further 2% for Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.”The 2012 Latour has a potent bouquet of blackberry, graphite and distinctive tertiary notes (instead of more marine scents observed four years earlier). Initially, the palate is slightly disjointed on the entry and displays a subtle herbal quality, plus hints of pencil shavings.

The 2012 demands a few minutes to really coalesce and achieve the precision and  pixelation that have been the hallmark of this Grand Vin in its youth. Layers of black fruit coat the mouth, and a bitter edge lends tension, particularly toward the very persistent finish. Though its release implies, and the rhetoric from the château indicates, that it is ready to drink, if you want my advice, cellar the 2012 for another five or six years to witness it in full flight. It has always been a candidate for wine of the vintage… just have a bit of patience.” Neal Martin

I like this Reserva from RdD. 100% Tempranillo aged for 24 months in oak barrels.

3.8 stars with more aging potential.

A deep ruby red and purple shades. Thick long legs in the glass.

On the nose medium intense aromas of blackberries, black cherries, black raspberries, horse saddle, leather and slightly oak.

  • Soham Phillips

This amazing powerhouse from Ribera del Duero. Tinto Pesquera Reserva 2012 - Bodegas Alejandro Fernández. Decanting is advised 👌🍷 delicious cherry, vanilla, leather and cederbox with cigars. Milk chocolat, forrest floor, laurel. Great lenght and depth Amazing wine!

90 pts Given the quality of the Crianza I really was delighted to find this Reserva, needs way more time to fully flower however, still very enjoyable for me now. The Crianza is ready now, but this shows sleeping intensity and great future potential and longevity, wait a few years however.

Typical earthy red fruit with good use of oak, dusty vanilla. Weighty, full with a long finish, it will be a star in the future.
